About dove & pigeon hunt at South Pioneers
How does a mixed dove and pigeon hunt work?
The Dove & Pigeon hunt means you may hunt dove-only spots, pigeon-only spots, or areas where both species are present. It all depends on the previous day’s scouting. Typically, your hunting time is divided equally between the two species throughout your stay, whether the birds are mixed together or found in separate areas.
Many lodges offer dove and pigeon hunting. Why choose South Pioneers?
At many lodges, one species is offered as a complement to the other. Usually, it means good dove shooting with some pigeon hunting on the side. At South Pioneers, both doves and pigeons are present in large numbers, allowing you to experience each as a true hunting opportunity in its own right. Our dove shooting can offer easily more than 1,000 shells per hunter/day. Our pigeon hunting is particularly consistent, with strong bird numbers throughout the season and three different ways to hunt them - from passing birds and feedlots to English-style hunting over decoys.
Do I need different gauges to hunt doves and pigeons?
A 20-gauge shotgun is an excellent choice for both species. Its light weight and easy handling make it ideal for the volume of shooting involved, while still providing plenty of performance for challenging pigeon shots.
Do pigeons and doves behave differently?
Yes, they behave quite differently. Doves tend to have more predictable flight patterns, with steady movement throughout the day. Pigeons are more unpredictable, often changing their behavior as the day progresses. They are also more wary birds, requiring the hunter to combine patience, strategy, and a bit of cunning to consistently bring them into range.
Is there a peak season to combine dove and pigeon hunting?
There is no real peak season. From early April through the end of August, doves and pigeons concentrate by the millions in northern San Luis, attracted by the harvest of peanuts, corn, soybeans, and sorghum. This steady supply of food keeps both species in the area throughout the season.
Can I choose how many days to hunt each species?
The hunt is normally divided equally between doves and pigeons, but it can be tailored to your preferences. If you let us know in advance how many days you would like to hunt to each species, our guides will scout accordingly and guide you to the best hunting fields for each species.
How far are the hunting fields from the lodge?
Our hunting fields are between 20 and 50 minutes from the lodge. Most of the drive is on paved roads, making for a comfortable and straightforward journey to the field.
Do we have lunch in the field?
Yes. Lunch is served in the field, where we set up a comfortable camp with a spacious tent, seating areas, and cots for a relaxing siesta after lunch. A traditional Argentine barbecue is prepared over a wood fire, bringing authentic Argentine flavors to the middle of the hunt.
